As a teenager I, behind the
counter at Baskin-Robbins, an ice cream store
in Honolulu, Hawaii. This my first job.
That time, I less interested in what the job
meant for my future and more concerned about
what it meant for my jump shot. My first summer
job wasn’t exactly glamorous, but it
me some valuable lessons such as responsibility,
hard work, balancing a job with friends, family,
and school. Even though I my taste for
ice cream after so many free scoops, I will never
forget that job and the people who me
that opportunity and the way they helped me get
to where I am today. Since then, I
as a community organiser, lawyer, lecturer, and
senior lecturer of constitutional law at the University
of Chicago Law School, and later I my skills
in writing, publishing my memoir “Dreams from
My Father,” before I the political career
as a member of the Illinois Senate.
